“Do some exercise, Its good for the heart”

Remember?? Your mother told you that many years ago and you would grumble and groan? You probably secretly agreed with her but the effort was too much….and you probably did not have enough motivation. And its not only in India. It has been shown that  only 20% of Americans get the recommended 150 minutes of strength and cardiovascular physical activity per week, more than half of all women  report doing no exercise whatsoever, and 80.2 million Americans over age 6 are entirely inactive. And if you look around, in schools, shopping arcades, malls and of course hospitals, we are going the American way. That partly explains the boom in Bariatric Surgery.

Emerging evidence shows that there are plenty of compelling reasons to start moving at any age and even if you’re ill or pregnant. Indeed, scientists are learning that exercise is, actually, medicine. “There is no pill that comes close to what exercise can do.”

Exercise is wonderful for your brain. It has been shown to decrease depression, help you to focus better and sharpen your memory and make learning and assimilation better. There is also some suggestion that it delays or prevents Alzheimer’s !!! Exercise seems to improve blood flow to the brain, feeding the growth of new blood vessels and even new brain cells.. You can become “brainier” with time!!!

Exercise might also make you age slower and feel happier. Given the obsession with looking young, that should be a major incentive.

Countless studies show that many types of exercise, from walking to cycling, make people feel better and can even relieve symptoms of depression. Exercise triggers the release of chemicals in the brain—serotonin, norepinephrine, endorphins, dopamine—that dull pain, lighten mood and relieve stress. It might lengthen lifespan by as much as five years !! That’s a big bonus, isn’t it??
