We at the Department of Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Surgical Oncology at the Fortis Hospital know that every patient is unique and deserving of the best possible care. We therefore, offer a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient service – both diagnostic and therapeutic – to patients with diseases of the lungs, airway, chest wall, mediastinum, esophagus, and diaphragm. Our surgeons are among the most experienced and highly reputed in the region and the country and are pledged to offer the highest level of expertise available in all areas of thoracic surgery.
Because currently, there are no yardsticks to compare our outcomes in India, the department audits its outcomes on a yearly basis and compares it to the Society of Surgeons (STS-USA) database.
This allows our surgical team to continually compare outcomes on all types of surgical procedures with hospitals internationally. The combination of clinical data collected and STS outcome reports is used to continually monitor performance and drive opportunities for outcomes improvement.
Why review outcome reports?
Choosing a qualified hospital can be a daunting task, especially in conjunction with the added burden of illness. Healthcare consumers are bombarded by the media with articles and reports touting excellent and innovative care provided by hospitals nationwide. But how do consumers determine which healthcare provider will truly meet their critical and diverse needs? Outcome reports provide objective numerical proof as opposed to subjective and potentially self-serving accolades provide true reflections of quality and value that other, less factual reporting methods may not.Additionally, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) has recently developed a comprehensive rating system that allows for comparisons regarding the quality of Thoracic surgery among hospitals across USA. Approximately 10% of US hospitals receive the “3 star” rating, which denotes the highest category of quality.
In the analysis of our post operative outcome data covering the period from July 2006 to December 2014, using the STS database as the yardstick, the thoracic surgery performance of our service in the Fortis-Escorts Network was found to lie in the highest quality tier, thereby notionally qualifying for an STS 3 star rating.
We therefore know for sure that our current surgical outcomes are well within accepted international norms and we pledge to be on our guard and maintain the standards that we have voluntarily set for ourselves. This is the philosophy which drives us all in this service.
