Enlarged thyroid glands (ie, goiters) extend in the chest posterior to the sternum, making the gland a substernal (or retrosternal) goiter. This increases in size causing pressure on the breathing tube causing respiratory embarrassment. This needs surgery and can be done by open, VATS or Robotic techniques.
