Mesothelioma Treatment
Expert surgical treatment for malignant pleural mesothelioma with multimodal therapy
About Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma
Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare but aggressive tumor that originates from the pleura. Shortness of breath, cough, and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space (pleural effusion) are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.
Multimodal therapies have been adapted for MPM, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The surgical goal for MPM is cytoreductive surgery to achieve microscopic complete resection.
Important Note
Mesothelioma is often associated with asbestos exposure. Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment are crucial for optimal outcomes.
Our multidisciplinary team provides comprehensive care combining the latest surgical techniques with coordinated medical and radiation therapy for the best possible outcomes.
Cytoreductive Surgery
Complete microscopic resection when possible
Multimodal Therapy
Combined surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation

Surgical Treatment Options
Surgical resection for patients with MPM can include either of two main approaches:
Pleurectomy/Decortication (P/D)
Lung-sparing surgery with complete removal of involved pleura and all gross tumor.
Procedure Details:
- Complete removal of parietal pleura
- Removal of visceral pleura
- Preservation of the lung
- Removal of all visible tumor
Preserves lung function while achieving tumor removal
Extrapleural Pneumonectomy (EPP)
En-bloc resection of involved pleura, lung, ipsilateral diaphragm, and often the pericardium.
Procedure Details:
- Removal of entire affected lung
- Resection of parietal and visceral pleura
- Diaphragm reconstruction
- Pericardial resection when needed
Most aggressive approach for extensive disease
Multimodal Treatment Approach
The most effective treatment for mesothelioma combines multiple therapeutic modalities:
Surgery
Cytoreductive surgery to remove all visible tumor
- Pleurectomy/Decortication
- Extrapleural Pneumonectomy
- Heated intraoperative chemotherapy
- Reconstruction procedures
Chemotherapy
Systemic treatment to target microscopic disease
- Neoadjuvant chemotherapy
- Adjuvant chemotherapy
- Targeted therapy options
- Immunotherapy protocols
Radiotherapy
Radiation treatment to control local disease
- Intensity-modulated radiation
- Hemithoracic radiation
- Stereotactic body radiation
- Palliative radiation
